Many of us have done it. We pack for the ‘What ifs’ and the ‘I mights’. We overpack (myself included, wink) because we are trying to prepare for the unpredictable nature of being away from home. But true travel style isn’t about planning for every hypothetical scenario; it’s about creating space to actually experience where you are.
Lately, the internet has been obsessed with a packing formula called ‘Packing Sudoku.’ While it has its own logic, it can feel a bit rigid, with not enough space for the in-between wear and laundry needs. I prefer a softer framework: the 5-4-3-2-1 capsule.
Note: The core mechanics of mixing, layering and editing such as swapping a dress for an extra lightweight layer or overshirt, apply to menswear as well.
Depending on the destination, the season, and my clients’ specific needs, I pivot this countdown, sometimes shifting it to: 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 shoes and 2 layers.
A capsule wardrobe is entirely seasonal and purposeful; it’s never a one-size-fits-all. Naturally, for colder climates, we introduce more pieces and heavier outer layers to the curation.
For this specific capsule, here is the breakdown of the visual layout:
The foundation is about mix-and-match harmony. A good starting point is looking for pieces that get along. A trick I use when curating for clients is playing with opposites: pairing something with clean, tailored structure alongside something soft and fluid.
A lot of the capsule wardrobes online lean heavily into bland, monochrome neutrals. While a sleek neutral palette can be so elegant, a capsule doesn’t need to be mean boring. You can play with rich textures, subtle patterns, or a cohesive pop of colour that makes you feel alive. In my sample capsule, you’ll see this come to life using a rich, warm Autumn seasonal palette.
Take the orange stripe button-down, for example: it works triple duty unbuttoned over swimwear or a tank by day, transitions seamlessly tucked into tailored trousers for dinner, and easily layers under a brown sweater for air-conditioned spaces or cooler weather.
This is where the capsule gets flexible enough to handle the ‘in-between’ moments. Instead of single-use dresses, look for pieces that layer effortlessly. For women, this might be a button-up shirt dress or lightweight midi that can be worn completely open as a third layer over a tank and jeans. For men, a breathable utility overshirt or unstructured blazer achieves the same result. Pair those with a sharp outer layer, and you can transition from an afternoon gallery crawl to a late-night dinner without a full outfit change.
Shoes dictate the rhythm of your day. To move through a new city with presence, your feet need to be supported. Depending on your destination and event needs, edit your footprint down to these essential categories:
The Mover: A clean, broken-in sneaker for heavy mileage
The Elevator: A refined loafer, (low block) heel, or polished slide that steps up your evening
The Breather: A lightweight sandal or slip-on for casual, slow strolls.
If you are skeptical about surviving on a single bag, trust me: it is entirely possible. When I spent a month traveling across Spain and London in 2024, I brought exactly one suitcase of my own curated capsule and precisely one handbag. Because of the mixed weather and certain events, I did pack a few more shoes than two pairs, but the principle stands! The secret is choosing a high-quality piece that looks just as intentional during a casual daytime walk as it does at a high-end dinner.
Style is ultimately a form of storytelling, and accessories are the punctuation marks of our travel wardrobe. They take up almost zero physical space but completely shift the mood of an outfit. A silk scarf tied onto your bag by day can accent your hair at night. A classic leather belt and a few curated, meaningful pieces of jewelry anchor the look, ensuring you still feel entirely like you, no matter how far from home you roam.
When you close a suitcase and leave literal breathing room inside, you are quietly telling yourself that you already have everything you need… Okay, maybe a little room for shopping too.
This summer, leave the ‘just in case’ pieces on their hangers. Trust that a lighter bag creates a lighter stride. The most beautiful thing you can wear in a new place isn’t necessarily a brand-new outfit. It’s your own undivided attention.
Until next time, travel lightly, move gently, and leave room for the unexpected.
