Without doubt New Year – both Western New Year and Chinese New Year are the busiest times of year for me,” says Susanne Schutz, Founder of Suzhong Consulting and Chinese Metaphysics Master. “People tend to be interested in what the new year brings. Some are afraid of the future; others just want to ensure they make the most out of the new year and seize all opportunities that come their way. There are some who have specific goals they would like to achieve in the new year – all of which can be helped and boosted with Feng Shui and/or Chinese astrology.”
“My interest was always with Asia, and Asian culture – specifically China,” says Schutz, who studied Chinese at university and eventually moved to Beijing 30 years ago.
For many years she worked as a consultant, specializing in setting up foreign companies in China, which included finding office and factory space, hiring people, training staff, negotiating contracts on all government levels, and so forth. She says that in the process of this work, Feng Shui always came up, especially when trying to find office space.
“Despite the fact that real estate agents and government officials never stopped mentioning Feng Shui concerns, nobody was able to adequately explain what it was all about,” she shares.
This led Schutz to her own research, eventually finding her own Grandmaster – Dato Joey Yap – and studying with him in Malaysia. She says she did not really intend to practice Feng Shui, or Chinese Metaphysics as a serious career, studying it out of pure personal interest.
However, according to her, life took a few difficult turns and at one point she had to make some “very tough life and career decisions. I had the option to either go back into business and management consulting, or follow my passion – Chinese Metaphysics. I chose my passion. In 2014, I started my own Chinese Metaphysics consulting firm in Hong Kong – one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life.”
“While most people refer to me as a Feng Shui Master, I am actually a Chinese Metaphysics Master. Chinese Metaphysics is an umbrella term for disciplines such as Feng Shui, Chinese Astrology (Bazi Astrology and Purple Star Astrology), Date Selection, Qimen Dunjia, martial arts, Chinese medicine,” says Schutz. Another misunderstanding, Schutz says is that Chinese Metaphysics is not tied to any religion and can be practiced regardless of religious leaning. “Feng Shui, for example, analyses landforms and geography in relation to a property – this has nothing to do with religion. Chinese astrology looks at elemental energies present at the time of birth – again, nothing to do with religion.”
Of the Chinese metaphysical disciplines, Schutz holds master’s degrees in Classical Feng Shui, Chinese Astrology, Chinese Date Selection and Qimen Dunjia, the latter which is the art of strategic execution and forecasting, based on spiritual alignments. Of the above, Schutz says that Feng Shui audits for homes and offices and Chinese astrology readings are the most popular.
“Most of my clients are of Asian descent – mainly because Chinese Metaphysics has always been an integral part of their lives and needs no further explanation or education, while the Western clients tend to have lived or worked in Asia for an extended period of time and are familiar with some basic Chinese Metaphysics concepts,” Schutz shares.
She adds that this being said, she works a lot in the Middle East, mainly in the UAE, where Feng Shui Masters are highly sought after and where astrology readings are “a bit of a taboo” and clients need to look outside of the UAE for a service provider.
“When I first started out as a Chinese Metaphysics Master in Hong Kong, I was often ridiculed and told that no non-Chinese could break into the industry,” says Susanne Schutz, founder of Suzhong Consulting.
“My (Chinese) Grandmaster then told me – ‘When someone says ‘You can’t do it’, that only means that they couldn’t do it. If you want to become a legend, you have to do legendary shit.” Yes, he is very straightforward and does not mince words, which I love.
Ten years on, I am still here; I am still serving my clients – the majority of which are Chinese or Asian, and I am not slowing down.”
