Former business manager Rhythma Berry’s career path made a U-turn after having a baby.
Ten years ago, New Delhi native Rhythma Berry had just had a baby girl. She was living in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with her husband. She and a friend were looking for soy candles (as they are non-toxic) and they did not want to burn toxic candles around their newborn babies, and unable to find any in the market, they started a kitchen experiment, “We literally watched some YouTube videos and started making our own.”
Their candles were popular among their friends and before long, they were receiving repeated requests for refilling friends’ “empty random candle jars”.
When the friend with whom Berry had started the experiment went back to Estonia for professional reasons, Berry says she was left with “a new passion which gradually turned into a full-time business”. Since then, she says there’s been no turning back!
When Berry and her family moved to Hong Kong seven years ago around the birth of her second child, a son, she decided to breathe new life into her candle-making. “I thought, why not restart Candle Up in Hong Kong as it had been so successful in each of the other countries I had lived in.” These countries had included: Cambodia, Dhaka and New Delhi.
Notwithstanding her Indian origins and the international influences of living abroad, Berry says that Candle Up is a Hong Kong brand that can claim to be ‘Made in Hong Kong’. “All candles are hand-poured in Hong Kong by myself; and we are a Hong Kong-registered company, she shares.”
While Berry admits to not having done much due diligence, “I just love candles and started making them again and I thought, let’s go with the flow and see where it goes”, Candle Up’s product line has developed as a glimpse at their website attests.
The website showcases the brand’s four stunning collections, which relate to the places the Berry family has called home : There’s The Kohinoor Collection, The Oriental Collection, The Terra Cotta Collection and The Vintage Collection. Each features open receptacles as well as bowl candles and lidded receptacles, that make beautiful additions to any home.
“Since Candle Up inception, we have believed in reducing landfill. Initially, all our candles were made in ceramic jars we found in recycled shops in Cambodia and the same continued in HongKong. Only in the last year fours years have we started our own product line as supply couldn’t keep up with demand.”
Berry adds that last year, the company hired a design company to start producing their own designs, with sustainability/ reusability at the fore, “We have produced all our candles in food grade glasses so they can be reused for serving apéritives or drinkware or food ware, after the candle burns out.”
She adds that refills are a huge part of their business where their clients bring back their jars (any brand/shape/size) for refills (which can be dropped off at the Concierge at Pacific Place Apartments in Admiralty), saving them from adding to landfill and making the candles more economical. “We use containers that are easy to refill, reuse or repurpose. All candles are made with 100% Soy Wax. We use phthalates free fragrance oils & essential oils. For a clean burning candle, we source 100% pure cotton and wooden wicks.”
Berry says that Candle Up has refilled over 10,000+ containers in the last 10 years. What’s more, they use zero plastic in their packaging. “Our gift boxes are perfect for storing those precious scarves and pashminas or your baby’s first items of clothing.”
How does Berry see their product line evolving in the future? “We are always looking for inspiration. I believe a candle to be a huge part of home decor, hence we put a lot of effort into their design. We have a lot in store for 2025 and have already put in production an entire new collection to be released in August 2025.”
Candle Up is offering a 10% discount on their website for first time customers. Candles are also available at the Cathay Shop (Asiamiles) (Online); The Ritz Carlton Spa (116 Floor), LRC Spa, 10 Old Peak Rd; Belivivi, Mee Lun St, Central (Online & Showroom); and Hong Kong Cricket Club, Sports Shop, Tai Tam.
“Make sure you do it for fun! Don’t put goals and targets in your head is my golden line – as it releases me from any pressure and reduces the risk of me making desperate decisions,” offers Berry.
“This advice came from my aunt. It helped me many times in the beginning phase of the business to set certain standards for us and to not bend over backwards for big brands. We happily declined many offers in the beginning, in which the terms were pretty lopsided. But now, five years on, we have set certain standards for us in the industry — and saying no is paying off.
I never thought I would have my own business one day, that too a successful one?”
