Cindy Wang is a social science researcher who came to Hong Kong for her PhD studies. She is married to a fellow mainlander and loves living in Causeway Bay, which she’s “deeply in love with” and never wants to leave as long as she remains in Hong Kong.
I came to Hong Kong in 2021 for my PhD studies. My husband and I moved to Causeway Bay in 2023 because we loved its convenience and coziness. We are very happy here because it’s a nexus of Hong Kong and international culture.
I had lived in Mainland China for 22 years before going to the US for Master degree studies and then I worked in Beijing for three years before coming to Hong Kong. I am lucky to have been exposed to different cultures, communities and living styles. I love Hong Kong, and I see myself as a world citizen now, so even though I feel settled here, I do see myself living elsewhere in the future — or, like a migratory bird, living in different places in different seasons!
Causeway Bay is like the hub of the universe of Hong Kong! Everyday, lots of things happen: sales promotions, exhibitions, gatherings, celebrations, etc. It’s so convenient that I can find anything I want to buy or do immediately. My place is also near the sea and the park so I can be close to nature and breathe fresh air. Living here makes me feel like a real Hong Konger, very close to the Hong Kong spirit and culture.
The East Coast Park Precinct is a treasure to me. It’s only a 2-minute walk from my house, and the sea view is spectacular! There are less people there than along the Victoria Harbour waterfront, and it’s more relaxing. Neighbours take their pets there and there’s even a running track along the water where I enjoy morning runs.
Here are my favourites: Yue Xing Fen Mian Dim Sum Restaurant, Mother of Pizzas, Ramen Jo…Yue Xing is a very small restaurant with absolutely delicious, freshly-fried dishes. Having a traditional Chinese dinner with some beers is wonderful there. Mother of Pizzas has the best pizza I’ve ever had; and I really love Ramen Jo’s seasonal specials — they never let me down.
I’m not a coffee expert so I don’t know much about that, but I do like to drink milk tea! Some good milk tea places are Silk Tea in Hysan Place and Comebuy Tea and Kung Fu tea in Tin Hau.
I love going to Victoria Park everyday: to run, swim in the public swimming pool, have a walk, lie on the grass on a sunny day, eat Indonesian food at Victoria Café or to attend events held here. This wonderful public space is an absolute favourite of mine.
Causeway Bay is an area that’s always in Hong Kong movies and on the news. Even though I have lived here for two years, I’m guessing that I have only explored a small part. There are still lots of things that I haven’t explored, such as many of the restaurants, event spaces, exhibitions, activities, and so on; and I haven’t mixed much with locals.
Even though some people think Causeway Bay is an expensive place to live, I think that if you want to, you can find a way to make it happen… It’s my forever place in Hong Kong. Even if I were to move house, I would not move out of the area. I am deeply in love with it here!
