Have Your Say – Aiko Pogoy

Share

Aiko Pogoy is a domestic helper from the Philippines. She’s been in Hong Kong for just three years and lives in Yau Tong in Kwun Tong district. This is the first time she’s been away from home. When she’s not working, she loves spending time in the library.

How long have you lived where you’ve lived?

Working in Hong Kong for nearly three years has been a real experience for me as it was my first time working abroad. The journey has not been without challenges. Leaving my daughter back home was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made but I wanted to provide a better future for her. In Yau Tong, where I live with my employer, I have found a supportive environment that has helped me adapt to this new chapter. The community is vibrant and welcoming. Every day, I try to give my best in caring for the children I look after, and I cherish the moments I can share with my daughter, from afar. This experience has strengthened my resilience and deepened my appreciation for family and the sacrifices we make for those we love. I am committed to making this opportunity work, and I look forward to the day when me and my daughter can be together again.

Can you see yourself living anywhere else?

Yes, I can definitely see myself living in Europe, which would give me the opportunity to grow personally and financially. I would like to learn from different perspectives and have the chance to work in an environment that encourages collaboration across cultures. Also, the lifestyle in many European countries is about balance between work and personal life. I would like to explore local customs, learn new languages, and connect with people from different backgrounds.

What’s so great about your home/neighbourhood?

What I truly appreciate about my employer’s place is that it’s close to the sea. It’s a real pleasure to enjoy the sound of the waves and the view right on our doorstep. The convenient location is great. We’re just a stone’s throw from shopping malls and the MTR. Plus, having a wet market nearby means that fresh food is always available.

Best little known gems?

One of the best little-known gems I’ve discovered is the library. When I was in the Philippines, I didn’t prioritize reading or learning through books. But, when I moved to Hong Kong, I realized the importance of continuous learning and self-improvement. I started to seek out resources that would help me achieve better results in my life. By going to the library, I’ve been able to expand my knowledge, develop new skills, and network with like-minded people. I highly recommend exploring your local library.

Best places to eat breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner?

As a domestic worker with limited time to eat out, I keep my meals simple and cheap. For breakfast, I enjoy starting my day with a quick stop at Maxim’s Cakes, where I can grab some fresh bread to go with my coffee. It keeps me energized for my busy Sundays filled with workshops and fitness activities. For lunch, I can’t resist the classic combo from McDonald’s. Their crispy French fries and chicken nuggets are my go-to, especially with a milk tea. When it comes to dinner, I prefer to keep it light and healthy. Normally, I’ll visit the wet market before heading back to my employer’s house to pick up fruit — bananas and oranges.
Overall, my dining choices reflect my busy lifestyle and budget.

Best places to drink coffee/find a drink?

When it comes to the best places to enjoy a coffee or find a refreshing drink, Starbucks stands out. One of my favorites is the Iced Chocolate Almond Milk Shaken Espresso. It’s the perfect blend of rich chocolate and smooth espresso, but a bit lighter thanks to the almond milk. I don’t visit Starbucks every Sunday, but I love treating myself. Whether it’s finishing a challenging job or simply getting through a busy week, it feels like a reward. The cozy atmosphere make it an ideal spot to savour each sip. Plus, with locations everywhere, it’s always a convenient option.

Best other hangouts?

One of my favorite things is hiking. I love the quietness to disconnect from the bustle. It’s the perfect opportunity to bond with my friends: walking and talking. Each trail is an adventure, and it’s amazing how nature can help us recharge and appreciate the little things in life. There’s no better way to spend time with friends.

What’s true/not true about your neighbourhood?

My neighbourhood is a mix of things. There is a strong sense of community and neighbours often get together for local events. But, although many residents actively participate in community initiatives, others do not. This can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, which takes away from the overall community spirit.
