Eurasian Lindsay Varty has published widely with Blacksmith Books – that is to say, a total of four books to date. Her latest book, Pickle the Porcupine and the Wild Hong Kong Adventure, is, as its name suggests, a children’s book and is in the same vein as Welly the Wild Boar and the Quest for the Egg Puffs (2021). Both books are co-creations with illustrator Catherine Choi.
While the earlier book took the reader on a foodie tour around Hong Kong, this one takes you on a tour of different modes of transportation in the city and all of the iconic forms are there: the Star Ferry, tram, bus, minibus, taxi, etcetera. Like its predecessor, the story is in English but features an immersive double page spread at the back of the book (with phonetics and characters for each of the transportation types), which asks the young reader how many modes of Hong Kong transport they have been on, and in so doing, encourages them to try out the ones they may have missed.
Drawing on Julia Donaldson (and why not? She’s beloved by absolutely everyone!), Varty uses rhyme to make the core narrative entertaining; and the colourful illustrations of Pickle certainly help to draw in the reader. It is funny to see smiling porcupines looking out of a Star Ferry vessel, whiskers dancing in the wind or dashing out of a minibus as he tries to return to his natural habitat before the minibus driver puts his foot on the gas and roars off again.
This being a children’s book, order is restored by the end of the book and Pickle is returned to his lovely, leafy home in the hills of Hong Kong.
