Richard Lau is a new father to a little girl of just over a year old. Though he finds Mid-levels a unique blend of cultures and friendly, he can see himself living southside in the future, owing to his love of being in and on the water.
I lived in Mid-levels for more than 10 years now.
Yes, I can see myself living in many other Hong Kong neighbourhoods, especially in the south (i.e. Repulse Bay, Stanley). I like water sports and beaches, and am really drawn to the coastal areas in the southern part of Hong Kong Island.
You’re surrounded by friendly neighbours of different backgrounds and cultures. There is a unique fusion of Eastern and Western cultures in this part of Hong Kong.
PURNA is a charming coffee shop in Mid-Levels with a secret garden and playground. Tucked away on Caine Road in Mid-Levels, children can play safely, while parents relax with a coffee.
I would recommend South Lane on Robinson Road. The staff are very friendly and often make recommendations when you have no idea what to order.
I would also recommend PURNA, a very unique cafe with a good vibe for families with children.
The Phoenix on Shelley Street. It’s a great place for beer at a reasonable price and makes it easy to meet new neighbours.
People say the vibe in Mid-levels is no longer there as many people have moved away or have gone back to their home countries. I don’t think this is true. Even though, yes many people have left, new people have come, new shops have opened and there are new things going on. I believe the unique vibe in this area will keep going strong.
