Last year, I started challenging myself weekly to create an outfit from my existing wardrobe that I’ve never matched before. This exercise sparks my creativity and helps me stay true to my values in terms of conscious consumption and intentional styling,” says Mya Kwan, Founder of Insightful Styles.
Her company offers personal styling including Colour Analysis, Bodyline Insights, Wardrobe Consultations, Event Styling and Group Workshops for both individuals and corporate employees.
“Personal style is a powerful form of self-expression that boosts confidence. My goal is to support others on their growth journeys while encouraging self-love,” she says, adding that the range of services she offers is tailored to support clients at every stage of their style evolution.
Kwan was born and raised in Hong Kong and spent a decade in the US, immersing herself in diverse cultures from coast to coast. After earning a degree in Communication Studies from UCLA, she moved to New York to work in logistics for four years.
In 2013, she returned to Hong Kong to explore new opportunities. She says a pivotal moment came when she joined an NGO as an Outdoor Educator, which ignited her passion for empowering others. She later transitioned into people development, facilitating learning workshops globally.
Personal challenges during the pandemic inspired her to combine her love for personal growth with styling, leading her to train in Colour Analysis in Tokyo and Styling at the London College of Fashion. She also took makeup artistry and video editing courses to adapt her business for a new landscape.
“What I enjoy most is witnessing my clients’ transformations as they discover styles that resonate with their personality and lifestyle,” she says.
“Helping people discover colours that complement their complexion, guiding them in creating an exciting and cohesive wardrobe, and watching their confidence grow as they embrace their refined personal style is incredibly fulfilling,” she says, adding that it is so much more than just clothes; it’s about fostering self-discovery and encouraging individuals to glow and grow at every stage of life.
“Fashion often gets dismissed as superficial, but it plays a significant role in self-expression and identity. It serves as a canvas for communicating our values and emotions non-verbally,” Kwan underlines. “Research in style psychology, particularly in clothed cognition, shows that our clothing choices can influence our thoughts and behaviors. For example, wearing certain colours or styles can boost confidence and elevate mood—a concept known as ‘dopamine dressing.’”
“When we choose outfits that resonate with us, that positive energy radiates outward, helping us connect with ourselves and others on a deeper level. Personal style goes beyond fashion; it encourages mindfulness in our choices, empowering us to express our creativity in meaningful ways.”
In Hong Kong, Kwan observes a fascinating mix in styles and palettes. Some people embrace bold colours and unique combinations that reflect their personalities and creativity, while others lean towards more conservative attire and ‘safe’ colours. “Many clients want to break free from their safe choices, but aren’t sure how to achieve that, come to me for support in realigning their personal style with who they want to become,” she shares (Kwan plans to launch a subscription service for personalized styling advice and explore the connection between style and wellness).
Having lived in New York and studied in Tokyo and London, Kwan says she appreciates the vibrant street styles and adventurous spirit found in those cities. “While Hong Kong has its own flair, it sometimes feels like that sense of adventure is missing from everyday styles. Nonetheless, I admire the diversity of styles here and love how they tell different stories about their wearers.”
On fast fashion, Kwan calls it a double-edged sword, offering accessibility, but often sacrificing quality and ethics. “I advocate for mindful consumption and support brands prioritizing sustainability. While I’m not entirely fast fashion-free yet, I’m actively working towards that direction,” she shares.
When it comes to dressing for one’s age, Kwan says she believes in breaking the mould and ignoring so-called ‘rules.’ “Personal style is all about self-expression, and everyone should feel free to wear what makes them comfortable and confident.”
Kwan works with individuals navigating life changes, such as changing jobs, promotion, divorce, retirement; and busy parents seeking a style refresh. She also collaborates with companies focused on employee engagement through style empowerment.
“My vision is to build a community centered on intentional styling and conscious shopping, promoting sustainability.”
“Sustainable fashion is crucial for the future of the industry,” says Kwan, adding that over the past few years, she’s been embracing sustainable practices by shopping second-hand and participating in clothing swaps. She says this allows her to find unique pieces, reduce waste and support a circular economy.
“The best career advice that I’ve adopted comes from philosopher Carl Jung: ‘I am not what happened to me; I am what I want to become,’”says Mya Kwan, founder of Insightful Styles.
“This serves as a powerful reminder that past experiences don’t define you; rather, it’s your aspirations and efforts that shape your future.”
