All of my shoots are deeply memorable experiences. I feel incredibly fortunate that my clients entrust me with such intimate glimpses into their lives and personalities. The level of trust they place in me is something I deeply appreciate and value,” says Ifat Hindes, Founder of IKH Photography.
Known as much for being in front of the camera and a notable presence on social media, at which she is an old hand, Hindes has a strong entrepreneurial background, having founded a pioneering wellness business, with the first fully uncontaminated cafe, bakery and factory in Hong Kong that specialises in gluten-free and allergen-friendly food and beverages. This venture required overcoming significant obstacles and challenging industry norms, she says, and was, she shares, the start of her entrepreneurial journey.
While photography is a new milestone on this well-trodden path, it is not something Hindes has recently uncovered. “I have always had a passion for photography to capture moments of importance,” she says. My photography significantly evolved under the mentorship of a former British Army photographer who instilled in me the importance of intuition and emotional connection in my work, and taught me to harness the power of natural light. This guidance helped me refine my skills and develop a unique photographic style.”
According to Hindes, photography is a deeply personal endeavour, and she recognizes that capturing someone’s image involves entering their sacred space. “I approach shoots with respect and sensitivity, either acting as the artistic director with my assistant or working independently, depending on the project.”
One recent job which called on Hindes to brandish her equipment was TEDx Tinhau Women. Before the shoot, she used relaxation exercises including meditation to help her subjects relax and to authentically express themselves. During the shoot, she shares that she maintained a swift and focused pace, ensuring that nothing interfered with the connection between her subjects and her lens to get the desired shots.
Another recent assignment was with Ballroom Bees, capturing instructors and their students in rehearsals and the Ballroom Bees Ball.
When Hindes is not shooting large events, she is working as a family photographer, celebrating ordinary moments between family members.
“My approach to family photography often involves capturing the essence of everyday life rather than staging a traditional photoshoot. I aim to be an unobtrusive observer, documenting precious moments authentically,” she shares, adding that working with families is a collaborative process, ultimately to create a comfortable and natural environment for capturing each family members’ personality.
Hindes is also in demand known for her distinctive approach to headshots, both for corporate clients and those in the arts. “My clients appreciate the way my portraits capture their unique character and individuality, offering a refreshing alternative to conventional headshot photography.”
A long-time Hong Konger who moved to Hong Kong with her parents in 1984 and grew up in the territory, Hindes married her high school sweetheart who she started dating in 1999 and they have built their lives here, raising their children.
“Hong Kong is so special,” says Hindes, adding, perhaps in a nod to her entrepreneurial past, that it’s a canvas that lends itself to the creation of just about anything.
“While navigating the complexities of relationships, friendships and work at 45 can be challenging, I am deeply grateful for where we are today,” she says.
“My father has always been a hard worker, and over the years he’s given me a lot of valuable advice, says Ifat Hindes, founder of IKH Photography. Looking back, I wish I had fully grasped the wisdom of the following pieces of guidance from him:
“Learn from your mistakes”
This prevents wasting precious time repeating the same errors.
“Punctuality is paramount”
Arriving early shows respect for others.
“Seek guidance when needed”
I value my father’s advice, and he always supports me, regardless of whether or not I’ve asked.”
