How long have you lived where you live?

I’ve never moved away from Tuen Mun before this semester! That would be 19 years.

Can you see yourself anywhere else?

I’m currently living in an HKU dorm in Kennedy Town. It’s a long way up the hill but it’s a chill place. I also enjoy the sea view here a lot. Kennedy Town has its relaxing atmosphere that resembles Tuen Mun. That’s why I love this place too.

What’s so great about your home/neighbourhood?

Although Tuen Mun is very far from the urban areas, I’d say it’s a rare place of tranquility in this restless city. The whole district is less noisy and more peaceful in general. We’ve got a lot of greenery here too— refreshing!

Best little known gems?

Butterfly beach is an amazing spot for hanging out and chilling out. The sunset here is magical. Fun fact: Inspired by the dancing waves on the rim of the sea, I once spent an afternoon writing W. B. Yeat’s White Birds in the sand. On top of this, the locals here are really friendly. I even got to tell a passerby the story behind the poem!

Best places to eat breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner?

Hung Kiu has a handful of nice restaurants. The dessert stores are epic too.

Best places to drink coffee/find a drink?

Fantasy Coffee next to Tuen Mun Ferry Pier. I love the milkshakes and slushies there. They also serve some cocktails.

Best other hangouts?

There are many party rooms in the Industrial Area! You may want to check them out. Apart from that, a bike ride along the Tuen Mun river can be a fantastic way to spend your afternoon. That’s how you get to be sporty here without hanging out in gyms.

What’s true/not true about your neighbourhood?

It’s a common misconception that we ‘ride cows’ to school. I have a friend who always sends me memes of people riding to school on a cow, since he knows I live here. Actually, there aren’t cows in Tuen Mun anymore! But here’s one thing for you: it ain’t that easy to travel to the city via the Tuen Mun Highway. We have traffic jams all the time! So next time you see your Tuen Mun friend, thank them for having the patience to venture far out to see you.
