A Summer Guide to Melanoma Prevention

As we embrace the vibrant heat of July, signalling the peak of summer in Hong Kong, it’s essential to highlight a significant health concern: Melanoma. This aggressive form of skin cancer is on the rise, making awareness and early detection critical for effective prevention and treatment.

Understanding Melanoma

Melanoma develops from melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its colour. While it can occur anywhere on the body, melanoma often appears in areas exposed to sunlight. In Hong Kong, where the sun shines brightly, understanding the risk factors is crucial. Factors such as fair skin, a history of sunburns, and a family history of skin cancer can increase your susceptibility.

The Dangers of Sun Beds

The use of sunbeds significantly heightens the risk of developing Melanoma. These devices emit harmful UV radiation, which can damage the DNA in skin cells and lead to mutations that result in cancer. Research shows that using sunbeds before age 35 increases the risk of Melanoma by up to 75%. This statistic underscores the importance of avoiding artificial tanning methods in favour of safer sun practices.

The Importance of Awareness

Awareness is the first step in combating melanoma. July, with its longer days and heightened UV exposure, serves as a crucial reminder to educate ourselves and our community about the signs and symptoms. Use the “ABCDE” rule when examining moles:

  • Asymmetry: One half does not match the other.
  • Border: Irregular or poorly defined edges.
  • Colour: Varied colours, including shades of brown, black, or even red, white, and blue.
  • Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser).
  • Evolving: Changes in size, shape, or colour over time.

If you notice any of these characteristics, consult a healthcare professional promptly.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Regular skin checks can dramatically improve the chances of early detection, essential for successful treatment. Dermatologists recommend performing self-examinations monthly and scheduling professional skin checks annually, especially for those at higher risk. Early-stage Melanoma is more easily treated and has a significantly better prognosis.

In addition to self-checks, be aware of other skin changes that could mimic Melanoma. A professional evaluation is always recommended when in doubt.

Protecting Yourself from UV Damage

Prevention is equally important. Here are key measures to safeguard your skin from harmful UV rays:

  1. Sunscreen: Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  2. Clothing: Wear protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  3. Seek Shade: Limit sun exposure during peak hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  4. Avoid Tanning Beds: These devices significantly increase Melanoma risk.

What to Do If You Are Diagnosed

If diagnosed with Melanoma, remember that there is hope. Treatment options vary based on the stage and severity, ranging from surgical removal to advanced therapies. Early detection leads to more treatment options and better outcomes.

As we enjoy the sun-soaked days of July, let’s prioritize our skin health and spread awareness about Melanoma. Encourage friends and family to perform regular skin checks and take preventive measures. Together, we can foster a community that values health and well-being, ensuring that we all remain sun smart this summer and beyond. Your skin is your first line of defence—let’s protect it!
