Have Your Say – Vicki Wilson-Jiwatram

Share

Northern British Vicki Wilson-Jiwatram is a serial expat having lived in the UK, Italy and Vietnam. Married to a local of Indian descent, the art educator has settled into Hong Kong life with her husband and daughter and feels very much at home  in Discovery Bay.

How long have you lived in Islands District?

My family and I moved back to Hong Kong this Summer, after 6 years of living in Vietnam, and we have recently moved to Discovery Bay after falling in love with the environment and community. Although we have only lived here for 4 months, we feel very settled already.

Can you see yourself living anywhere else? Please explain.

My husband was born on Hong Kong Island and grew up in Causeway Bay with a love of the city. When we met, I was living in Sai Kung and very much enjoyed the atmosphere and local area over there because I’m a big fan of hiking. We later moved Island-side again and enjoyed the opportunities that were offered by being close to the parks and city. Hong Kong is such a liveable city. I feel like each area has distinct advantages so I can absolutely see us living in different places within the territory. We love Lantau life, for now, but who knows? I’m a traveler at heart and have lived in many different countries already. Hong Kong is home, and for that we are very grateful. But, never say never…

What’s so great about your home/neighbourhood?

We love our sea view and the greenery of where we live. A lot of our time is spent admiring the view, walking outdoors and enjoying the Plaza and beach. The simple pleasures for us are the most enjoyable. Ultimately, we are all happiest near a body of water so we are blessed to call Hong Kong home. As a community, DB is very friendly and safe. We love that people say hello and even in a short time, we feel right at home. It is a beautiful place to live.

Best little known gems?

I’m not exactly sure that it counts as a “hidden” gem, but we love the pop up events in DB. The Sunday Market and events give such a rich sense of community. It’s always great to see small  businesses celebrated.

Best places to eat breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner?

We enjoy eating at home as my husband is a great cook. Aren’t we lucky to have so many cuisines available in Hong Kong though? So many choices for any type of budget. As a vegetarian myself, I am happy anywhere that caters for my kind of diet. We love Koh Tomyums, the Thai restaurant in the plaza and its balcony – great food, friendly service and a gorgeous view of the beach.

Best places to drink coffee/find a drink?

As a huge coffee fan, I love Coffee Academics. And Uncle Russ’s coffee on the go, you can’t beat the friendliness of the staff at the pier. They are always ready with a smile and warm greeting.

Best other hangouts?

We love sitting in the plaza in DB and watching the world go by. Bring your favourite drink along and it’s a great hangout to chill and chat, or to bring a sketchbook (me) or skipping rope (my daughter.) If you were to ask my daughter, she’d probably say the beach playground too.

What’s true/not true about your neighbourhood?

I’m not sure I have lived in DB long enough to be knowledgeable about what is true and what isn’t, but what I do know is that it is a friendly and peaceful place to be. Previously I had heard it was an expensive place to live but we have found something that suits our budget, so it is possible. I’ve also heard from some about the distance but this always makes me smile as the ferry is so convenient and you’re in Central in less than half an hour. I find the journey relaxing so it is definitely not a barrier for us. I’d say DB life is great for families and I’d recommend it to anyone!
