Tshomo S. is originally from Nepal, but has spent the last 12 years living with her family in Wan Chai, a district she says has it all. She recalls summer days spent at the swimming pool and loves the quieter corners of the district such as the harbourfront and the hiking paths behind Hopewell Centre.
I’ve lived in Wan Chai for around 12 years. It’s where I have some of my fondest childhood memories, especially of summer days at the swimming pool.
Absolutely. As much as I love Hong Kong, and Wan Chai, I love how exciting and enriching new environments can be. Growing up, I spent some time living in Nepal, so I’m always itching to explore new places both within and outside of Hong Kong.
I think Wan Chai’s got it all. It’s one of the most convenient places to live in. You can hop on a bus to get to practically anywhere in Hong Kong. Plus, it’s super close to Central and Causeway Bay, so going shopping or dining out is no trouble at all. Most of Wan Chai is always bustling, I love the quieter parts like the harbourfront and also the hiking path to Wan Chai Gap Road located behind Hopewell Centre. If fact, you can hike all the way to Aberdeen Country Park. The best part is there are multiple paths you can take. Some are pretty rugged, and if, you pick the right one, you can even pass by the Aberdeen Reservoir.
The real gem to me is the Wan Chai Harbourfront Space. I’m there all the time to catch the sunset – it’s one of the most beautiful views in all of Hong Kong. I also love going for a walk there in the mornings cause it’s super chill and quiet.
As a big fan of Vietnamese food, Bánh Mì Nếm is one of my favourite spots for a quick takeaway and for grabbing a bite on the go. When I have more time, Pho Vi is another Vietnamese restaurant that I go to. It’s a cozy restaurant conveniently located next to the MTR and I love their Bún thịt nướng. When I’m craving Nepalese momos, which is very often, I usually get them from 24-35 Fusion Fast Food and their momos never disappoint. If I’m in the mood for something spicy, Qi – House of Sichuan is my go-to spot.
My all-time favorite coffee shop in Wan Chai has to be H. Coffee & Shop. It has a lovely view of people walking across the busy bridge to the Immigration Tower so it’s an ideal spot for people-watching.
Lee Tung Avenue is really nice for a short stroll, especially during festivals and special events, when it is usually covered with lights and decorations. Spirit Bookstore is another place I only recently discovered. It’s small but packed with secondhand books at really good prices, and I love visiting the store.
Some people think that Wan Chai is a bit sketchy, but I’ve never felt unsafe here, and I’ve never heard anyone mention any issues either.
