Have Your Say – Symone Budhrani

Symone Budhrani is a Hong Kong-born citizen of Indian origin. She lives in the Ho Man Tin district of Kowloon with her husband and two children, and is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Hong Kong. When she’s not fawning over local delicacies like cheung fan, fish ball sticks and egg waffles, she works for the legal firm, Linklaters.

How long have you lived where you live?

I was born and raised in Hong Kong. My parents moved here as children, so I consider myself a second-generation resident. I hold a Hong Kong Chinese passport; and although I am of Indian origin, I am a naturalised Chinese citizen.

Can you see yourself anywhere else?

I spent two years in Singapore after getting married in 2008, but I missed Hong Kong immensely, as all my family is based here. There’s a unique vibe in Hong Kong that Singapore lacked at that time, which made it difficult for me to stay away.

What’s so great about your home/neighbourhood?

The skyline, the waterfront, the hiking trails and the beaches—all of these make Hong Kong truly special. I believe many of us took these highlights for granted until the pandemic prompted us to explore our surroundings more deeply. One of my favourite spots is Ham Tin Beach in Sai Kung. It’s a hidden gem with crystal clear water, perfect for a day out. There are so many islands and beaches like this waiting to be discovered!

Best little known gems?

One of my absolute favourites is a small dumpling shop in Jordan that serves the most incredible chili dumplings. Each bite is bursting with flavour, making it a must-visit for any foodie. Another favourite is Arirang Korean Restaurant. I’ve been dining there since I was a child, and now it’s one of my children’s favourites as well.

Best places to eat breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner?

While you can find upscale dining experiences worldwide, Hong Kong offers one-of-a-kind local delights. One of my favourites is the Cheung Fan shop on Cox’s Road, which has been serving delicious cheung fan for over a decade – it’s always bustling with customers. For a quick snack, I love the satay and fish ball sticks on Carnarvon Road, right in the centre of Tsim Sha Tsui, the stall there has been a local favourite for years. Finally, for dessert, my favourite is the egg waffle balls on Hillwood Road. They’re perfect – crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Also, King of Coconut on Dundas Street, Mong Kong has the best coconut juice in Hong Kong!

Best places to drink coffee/find a drink?

I love stopping by local milk tea shops, which have been a staple in our community for generations.

Best other hangouts?

One of my favourite places to hang out is the Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC). It’s a fantastic spot to relax and enjoy some quality time with family and friends. I love the laid-back atmosphere, and it feels like a second home.

What’s true/not true about your neighbourhood?

There’s a fascinating rumour about a reputed haunted location in Ho Man Tin and some residents have reported strange noises and sightings, adding a touch of mystery to the neighbourhood. However, there’s no concrete evidence to support these claims. In reality, Ho Man Tin is known for its warm and welcoming family atmosphere,
