Have Your Say – Steph Si

Steph Si is an upbeat Hong Konger who works full-time and tutors kids when she’s officially off work. When not working, Steph keeps fit with a running group, running east and west from the AIA wheel on the waterfront. She lives with her family in Kennedy Town.

How long have you lived where you’ve lived?

I was born in Hong Kong but I spent 12 years studying abroad in the UK. I returned to my home land after my masters and have resided here since. Despite frequent trips back home during term breaks, adding up all those years, I reckon I’ve lived in Hong Kong for more than 18 years now.

Can you see yourself living anywhere else?

I can’t see myself living anywhere else. Hong Kong is where I belong, even after all those years in the UK. The city is always buzzing with loads of activities yet it’s easy for anyone to escape to nature. While I enjoy traveling, no place matches the unique blend of urban and natural environments that Hong Kong offers. The vibe, the culture – it’s all just spot on. The cultural connection and sense of belonging here are indeed irreplaceable.

What’s so great about your home/neighbourhood?

I live in Kennedy Town and it is a gem; it’s got that perfect mix of local charm and modern convenience. The promenade is perfect for a morning jog and one of the best perks is that I can hike up to The Peak easily from here. There are tons of local eats here, and it’s becoming quite the hip spot with cool cafes and bars. Besides, it’s super well-connected with the MTR and trams.

Best places to eat breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner?

If you’re looking for a great breakfast or brunch spot in Kennedy Town, I’d recommend Blend and Grind. They have a good selection of food and I always have my coffee paired with their fluffiest pancakes. Their avocado toast with a poached egg on top is something I often crave as well.

For lunch, nothing beats Sheung Hei for me. Their claypot rice, especially the one with salted fish and chicken, reminds me why I love Hong Kong so much. But what I also love about this place is their yum cha offerings. With friends and family, you can enjoy classic dim sum dishes, which pair wonderfully with chinese tea, making it a unique yum cha experience.

For dinner, especially in winter time, I often find myself at Smithfield Market and Cooked Food Centre. The centre has several stalls specializing in hotpot. It’s not just about the warmth it provides against the winter chill; it’s the experience of cooking your food together at the table, dipping it into delicious sauces, and sharing stories with friends or family.

Best places to drink coffee/find a drink?

One of my favorite spots for coffee used to be First Boy Coffee, which was next to a motorbike store. It was a peaceful retreat away from the crowded Soho West, allowing for a quiet coffee experience even on weekends. The café offered the best view for people-watching across the park in front. Unfortunately, it has relocated to Chai Wan but I’m looking forward to another coffee shop taking up the same spot and giving off the same vibe. However, there’s still Fineprint in South Lane, which is another excellent spot for coffee lovers. Fineprint serves up some of the best flat whites and sourdough toasties in the area.
