Have Your Say – Michael Lui

A long-time resident of Tai Koo Shing, Michael loves the convenience of the area’s location on the Island MTR line. While he admits that the area has become more commercialized in recent years, its still within easy distance to hidden gems like egg waffles and the Monster Building.

How long have you lived where you live?

I have lived in my current Tai Koo (Tai Koo Shing) neighbourhood for about seven years, but I also grew up in the Tai Koo area for most of my primary and secondary school years.

Can you see yourself anywhere else?

Yes, I am open to exploring different districts, as each has something unique to offer. However, there are also considerations, such as convenience, lifestyle and price point. I will most likely explore a more pet-friendly neighbourhood next.

What’s so great about your home/neighbourhood?

It is a large residential area, so everything is very convenient, with a good variety of shops. Being on the Island Line, it is also easily accessible for those who work in Hong Kong Island.

Best little known gems?

The Tai Koo area has become more commercial over the years, with an increasing number of office buildings compared to a decade ago. As a result, the shops and restaurants have also shifted to more mainstream options. Therefore, I would prefer to explore something a bit further out in Shau Kei Wan. One of my favorite places to visit when I have a sweet tooth and don’t mind a stroll is Master Low-key Food Shop (低調高手大街小食), which specialises in traditional Hong Kong-style egg waffles. It’s hands down the best in town!

Best places to eat breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner?

For a quick lunch, I like to visit a small Thai restaurant called Thai Niyom, located right inside the famous “Monster Building” in Quarry Bay. They offer great lunch deals and authentic Thai food, making it very popular among the office crowd.

For a nice weekend brunch, I enjoy going to the Tai Koo branch of PHI Coffee & Pancake, where they serve excellent Japanese-style soufflé pancakes.

Best places to drink coffee/find a drink?

While the area isn’t the most popular for drinking, there is Sugar, a rooftop bar at the East Hotel that offers stunning views, especially during happy hour.

Best other hangouts?

I enjoy taking an evening walk around the Quarry Bay Promenade. It offers a nice view and a relaxing atmosphere, making it great for runners and dog walkers as well.

What’s true/not true about your neighbourhood?

It’s true that the neighbourhood has become a bit commercialized, but there is still plenty to explore in the area!
