According to Karndeep Singh, Tung Chung is a great place to be: it has the fastest MTR line, which is expanding into Tung Chung East and West stations, a promenade from where you can watch the planes fly and a strong identity through groups such as the Islands Youth Network. It’s close to nature and residents like him benefit from the neighbourhood’s parks and cycling paths.
Over a decade!
To be honest, no. I feel a strong connection to the Islands District and that is where I want to grow. Seeing the infrastructure develop over the years has made me feel like I’m part of the community’s future.
It feels like the infrastructure here was built specifically for the community rather than for business. Unlike other parts of Hong Kong, we don’t have high-rise commercial buildings crowding us out. Instead we have accessible public swimming pools, a large shopping mall and everything feels within reach.
Safety and convenience are also huge pluses. I have a hospital and a fire station very close by which is crucial in emergencies. There are schools within walking distance for students and every housing estate has its own mini or large shopping centre. I am also really happy to see the MTR expanding into Tung Chung East and West because it shows the area is continuing to move forward.
For me the real gems are the cycling tracks. There are various tracks open for cyclists and I would love to see more people on bikes than cars here. If you are lucky you might even spot a cow! It’s rare but I have seen some and it reminds you that nature is still near.
Another personal gem is the local parks. When I was younger I spent most of my time playing dodgeball on the badminton courts with other residents. It felt amazing to connect through sports and even though I don’t have as much time now I still miss that feeling.
Not a little but a giant gem is, you might get lucky and see a resident’s giant tortoise!
There are quite a few cafes inside the shopping malls here like Blue Bottle, etc., I don’t have a preference towards any as my go to is usually water!
The Tung Chung Promenade is the best spot for hangouts. You can watch the planes fly over and have a relaxing walk by the seaside. There is also the Community Liaison Centre right there which hosts various events.
Another great way to hang out and meet people is through the Islands Youth Network. We get to join events organized by the Home Affairs Department and it really brings the youth together to create strong bonds.
A fun fact people might not know is that the Tung Chung line is the fastest line in Hong Kong (excluding Airport Express)! Also, despite being a bit further out from the city, Tung Chung is growing by the second with new public housing estates and facilities constantly popping up.
