Faariah Zaidy is a final-year student at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) in Sai Kung. A Muslim of Pakistani descent in her early 20s, she resides with her parents and sisters in Kwun Tong District.

How long have you lived in Shun Lee?

I was born and raised in Shun Lee; a lively housing estate nestled in the eastern region of Kowloon [in Kwun Tong District]. This lively neighbourhood has always felt like home to me. Growing up as a non-Chinese student in such a diverse community offered a unique experience. I had the opportunity to listen to and witness a variety of stories. These experiences have shaped my perspectives and deepened my appreciation for the neighbourhood I call home.

Can you see yourself living anywhere else? Please explain.

While I do envision myself living in other places in the future, particularly in the outlying areas, my heart belongs to Shun Lee. Growing up in this community, I experienced a unique blend of urban life and close-knit neighbourhoods that shaped my early memories and provided me with countless cherished memories. I would love to stay here for a longer time.

What’s so great about your home/neighbourhood?

The community spirit in Shun Lee stands out as one of its most valuable attributes that fosters a sense of belonging among residents. Situated away from the bustling areas of Hong Kong, it offers a more tranquil lifestyle. While transportation is not always super convenient – requiring a train to reach the MTR, this inconvenience is, for me, a blessing in disguise. It gives a sense of peace and serenity that is hard to find in the more hectic parts of the city. This balance of community and calm makes Shun Lee an exceptional place to live.

Best little known gems?

One hidden gem in Shun Lee is the Lee On Road Sitting Out Area. It has a peaceful garden entrance and offers a retreat that is not much used by residents.

Best places to eat breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner?

Shun Lee may be a compact estate, but it offers some great dining options. For breakfast, the Hollywood Café stands out with a diverse menu featuring Chinese and Western dishes.
For lunch or dinner, Thai Yin, a newly opened Thai restaurant, has quickly become a favourite with flavourful dishes and a welcoming atmosphere.
As a Muslim, I try to seek out halal options, but these are limited within the estate. So, I frequently explore other parts of Hong Kong, like Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay for delicious ‘Desi’ cuisine. If you’re looking to try it, I highly recommend Biryani [a mixed rice dish popular in South Asia] — it’s a must-try!

Best places to drink coffee/find a drink?

For drinks, Kung Fu Tea is great. While there aren’t many dedicated coffee shops, you can easily find coffee and drinks in local convenience stores. There are also plenty of cha chaan teng serving various drinks.

Best other hangouts?

Jordan Valley Park is a great place for leisure activities. It attracts people from all over Hong Kong who go to enjoy picnics with family, making it a vibrant community gathering spot. I go there with family and friends to relax, and enjoy Hong Kong’s nature. Fun fact, the park was constructed atop a former landfill in 2011!

What’s true/not true about your neighbourhood?

A common perception is that Shun Lee is inconvenient. While it is true that it’s a distance from the MTR, there are numerous buses that provide easy access to the train station, at high frequency. In fact, there are many bus routes that connect you to even the farthest destinations in no time.
