Founder of Wee Bean Amy Tang is the first to admit that parenting isn’t easy. In fact, her company, Wee Bean was set up from the know-how she’d gained trying to make her own parenting journey easier.
“It all started when our baby girl struggled with severe eczema, which made us realize how crucial it is to have gentle, chemical-free clothing options,” she says, sharing that their mission to create safe, organic clothing for little ones with sensitive skin was personally originated and acutely felt.
From their signature swaddle blankets, made from a cozy blend of bamboo and organic cotton, their product range has grown alongside their daughter to include organic cotton bandana bibs, milestone blankets, sensory blankets, onesies, rompers, and so much more.
“We’re all about creating products that make life easier and more joyful for families,” she says, adding that they test everything on their little ones first, ensuring that their products are both parent-approved and truly child-friendly.
As their community of customers has grown, so have they alongside them. “We’ve introduced toddler and big-kid wear, featuring convertible zip rompers and snap-button onesies that make diaper changes a breeze. Our 2-piece sets, T-shirts, and hoodies are designed to be both practical and adorable, ensuring that busy parents can find functional, yet stylish options.”
Like almost all of us, Wee Bean is inspired by the vibrant food culture of Hong Kong, with designs under the Taste of Hong Kong Collection capturing the essence of Hong Kong’s unique food culture, allowing people to carry memories of its palate-pleasing sensations wherever they go.
“Both my husband and I were born in Hong Kong and spent our childhood in Vancouver, but the flavours and memories of Hong Kong have always felt like home,” Tang says, explaining the drive behind their crowd-pleasing collection. “Our swaddles, bibs, and onesies are consistently our bestsellers, especially our signature Dim Sum and Boba prints—customers just can’t get enough of them!”
“Our designs draw from our favourite culinary experiences, anything inspired by cha chaan teng, like our milk tea and egg tart designs or dim sum—those bamboo steamers filled with har gau and siu mai bring back fond memories of family gatherings. It’s not just about the delicious food; it’s the warmth of those moments, the laughter and the lively atmosphere that makes these occasions and memories of them so special. Like the iconic Hong Kong-style bakeries – just a whiff of those familiar scents takes me back to running errands with my mum,” she says.
Tang confides a point of pride being their Gift sets, “which we lovingly call our Welcome Home Baby Gift Sets”, citing them as the perfect way to celebrate a new arrival, packed with essentials like extra-large swaddles, adjustable snap-button bibs that grow with your little one, milestone blankets, and fair-trade rattle dolls.
“We’ve also created gift sets for toddlers, kids and even parents, always focusing on items that are genuinely useful. Our goal is to make sure that every product we offer brings joy and practicality to families, helping to lighten the load in diaper bags and everyday living,” she adds.
According to Tang, sustainability is at the heart of everything they do. “We prioritize using organic and natural materials that minimize harm to the environment —GOTS-certified organic cotton and bamboo for our baby wear, and for good reason! Both materials are incredibly gentle on sensitive skin, making them perfect for little ones, especially those prone to eczema.”
“Organic cotton is not only soft and breathable, but it’s also grown without harmful chemicals, which means it’s safer for both babies and the environment. This natural approach helps reduce exposure to irritants, allowing parents to feel confident about what their children are wearing. Bamboo is a wonderful, sustainable choice. It’s naturally hypoallergenic and has moisture-wicking properties, which help keep babies dry and comfortable. Plus, bamboo grows quickly, making it an eco-friendly option that aligns with our commitment to protecting the planet.”
By choosing these materials, Wee Bean aims to create baby wear that’s not only kind to delicate skin, but also respectful of our environment.
“Every step of our production process reflects our commitment to reducing waste, no matter how small the effort might seem,” she says, elaborating that this includes eco-friendly practices, such as using recycled cardboard and paper for gift packaging, along with hemp rope ties and reusable pouches. “Whenever possible, we opt for bulk packaging to cut down on unnecessary plastics. These little choices add up, and we’re proud to contribute to a healthier planet.”
Tang says they also believe in sustainability beyond the environment. “Our fair-trade rattle dolls are a perfect example. They’re crafted by talented women in rural Bangladesh, providing them with fair trade employment opportunities, better wages and improved working conditions. This collaboration not only empowers these mothers but also strengthens our community in meaningful ways.”
She adds that every little choice can make a difference for our children and the world they will grow up in and that, looking to the future, she’s excited to continue working on meaningful projects—whether it’s designing new prints that spark nostalgic memories or finding ways to empower fellow parents. “I hope The Wee Bean can be a small part of making parenthood a little easier and more joyful for everyone.”
“The best work advice I’ve received is to never get easily discouraged, even when it feels like progress is slow,” says Amy Tang, Founder of Wee Bean.
“Remember, the needle doesn’t move overnight, but it is moving—little by little, and builds up to something significant. Always keep your focus on the bigger picture and remind yourself why you started this journey.”
“Celebrate the small wins along the way, not just the big milestones. Staying hands-on and connected to your mission and your community makes all the difference.”
