Elsa Jeandedieu is one of Hong Kong’s most in-demand artists — a full-time creative whose work can frequently be seen and who has continued to procure jobs, despite economically challenging times.
Her street art covers walls in SoHo, Central and Sheung Wan, while her more recent textured paintings, (including the one she specially created for the Being Neighbourly ‘Transitions’ art exhibition in November last year), mark a different stage, that of Jeandedieu ‘all grown-up’.
It was something of a surprise, then, to recently discover yet another stage in the artist’s creative journey — On Paper Lab.
“On Paper Lab was established in 2020. After collaborating as muralists for four years, me and Carol Bellese Choi, founded this sister company of Elsa Jeandedieu Studio,” says Elsa Jeandedieu. “By combining our passions for painting, design, interiors and digital art, we aimed to make wall art more accessible to the public — and also to earn extra income during the pandemic.”
According to Jeandedieu, the name ‘On Paper Lab’ represents creativity on paper. “The, ‘Lab’ signifies the total freedom to experiment,” she says. It contains categories including: Prints and Posters; Frames, Colouring, Homeware and Collections.
“Our offerings also include a Kid’s Collection, with colouring postcards and posters, making On Paper Lab suitable for children as well.” The posters for kids are perfect nursery wall art or as thoughtful baby shower and birthday gifts. All prints, as for the other collections, come in various sizes and different framing options are available.
Many of the artworks were inspired by commuting. “I used to do sketches during my commutes to pass the time, and some works would later evolve into print designs, such as the line-drawing artworks in the Hong Kong Magic City Collection,” she explains.
“I draw inspiration from basically everything, including the heritage and iconic sights of Hong Kong like trams, junks and minibuses, as well as daily wordplay and inspirational quotes. My daily life influences me significantly, leading me to incorporate words of love and energy, along with local sayings like ‘Fai Di Laa (Hurry Up!)’ and ‘Lido M’Goi (Stop here, please)’ in some of the prints.”
“My personal favorite is the ‘Olive Ding Ding’, which holds a lot of sentiment for me since I created it 16 years ago. Unlike some of my later sketches done on an iPad, this piece was entirely created on paper,” she says. While the designs of the ‘Hong Kong Magic City’ date from 2009, others, she says, were created as recently as 2020.
“As part of the ‘Hong Kong Magic City’ Collection, the concept was to transform the concrete landscape of Hong Kong into an organic city, incorporating wood textures throughout. The organic and delicate handling of textures and natural elements in this work may have pre-echoed some of my later pieces.”
She adds that she also has a fondness for abstract lines and patterns that “can elevate interiors”. Meanwhile, the work of Carol, a native of California, based in Hong Kong, “reflects feminine power and light-hearted humour, exploring themes from identity to dance. Overall, we embrace a free-flowing approach to our topics.”
Jeandedieu continues, “Some of the designs were created from cropped sections of our mural projects or served as concept art and inspirations. Others show a significant influence from my textured artworks.”
