Joanna Bowers is a British impact screenwriter and director based in Hong Kong. She’s best known for her cross-cultural, international narratives that follow unlikely heroes on extraordinary journeys.
Her feature documentary debut, THE HELPER, had a successful three-month theatrical run in Hong Kong with Edko Films’ MovieMovie. Her follow-up film, REFASHIONED, premiered at DocDMZ and was released theatrically in both Hong Kong and Japan. Both films can be found on iTunes and Amazon Prime.
Complimenting THE HELPER, she has written My Extra-special Aunty, with proceeds going to charities Enrich and Pathfinders.
I studied Broadcast Journalism at university in the UK – but never actually worked as a journalist, choosing instead to go into film and television production. Early on in my career, I worked for a couple of female producers in Los Angeles who were also writers, and they inspired me to learn screenwriting once I had begun directing in order to be able to better translate my vision onto the screen.
My Extra-Special Aunty is my first children’s book. I was inspired by a group of migrant domestic worker artists called Guhit Kulay, who I met after a screening of my first feature documentary film The Helper.
The film explored the complex maternal sacrifices that migrant workers make in order to create a better future for their families. Since the documentary was really only suitable for older kids, I felt we had missed an opportunity to talk to the younger ones about the unique relationship they have with their ‘Aunty’ here in Hong Kong, and so over several months, I consulted with the domestic workers and explored what they would want their young wards to know about their lives. Then I wrote My Extra-Special Aunty, and two Filipino members of Guhit Kulay, Noemi Manguerra and Cristina Cayat, created the illustrations. We decided to donate all the proceeds from book sales to two migrant worker-focused NGOs here in Hong Kong, Pathfinders and Enrich.
I pivot between writing and directing. I’ve made two feature documentary films so far, and I’m currently filming number three. A screenplay I wrote, entitled Girl Wonder, has just made it through to the semi-finals of the Sundance development programme for writers, so I’m hoping to be selected for the residential programme in the United States in January. It’s a dream opportunity for a writer and would be a really beneficial step in getting the film into production.
The heroine of my screenplay Girl Wonder is a nine-year-old Filipino girl called Lulu Hernandez who is obsessed with superheroes and is also a secret robotics genius. She’s my current favourite character because I have a daughter the same age and hate to see gender biases against girls. I want her to believe she can do or be anything, and often she has a lack of role models to aspire to.
Routine is my secret. Scheduling time to write and blocking out the rest of the world while I do it. After a little while, I get into my groove and the process really flows, which feels amazing. And once I have a first draft, rewriting, rewriting, rewriting!
I’ve been re-reading a lot of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s work recently on my Kindle, and love how she explores culture and identity in such a vibrant way. It really resonates with the type of international, female-driven stories I aim to bring to the screen.
I do love ReBooked and Bookazine here in Hong Kong – but when I visit my parents in the UK, I also love Sevenoaks Bookshop. One of my favourite things is to curl up in their coffee shop with a new purchase and a hot latte on a rainy day.
Don’t wait to be given permission to do something. Early on in my career, I often doubted my ability because of a lack of role models.
