Have Your Say – Ken Lam

Ken Lam is a local student from City University of Hong Kong. Talkative and friendly, he loves reading, history and cycling.

How long have you lived where you live?

I have lived in Fanling for around 10 years. Before this, I lived in different places due to financial factors. Fanling is a beautiful place to live since it is far from urban life. You can enjoy the countryside here!

Can you see yourself anywhere else?

I would like to try living in other parts of Hong Kong, like Hong Kong Island, because it has unique and wonderful tramways. Besides, Hong Kong Island has a lot of history and cultural spaces, especially declared monuments and historical buildings. As for moving aboard, I have no plans at the moment.

What’s so great about your home/neighbourhood?

I love Fanling because it has a lot of beautiful places to visit. It is far from the city centre, and there are locations such as Lau Shui Heung and Hok Tau Reservoir —extraordinary places. The Tourism board describes it as a ‘Breathtaking mirror of the sky.’ Also, Fanling is a hot place for the cyclist because of its well-designed biking route. Visitors can easily follow the route to Sheung Shui.

Best little known gems?

Luen Wo Market is a former market for Fanling residents. It was built in 1951. After half a century, it has been converted into a recycling collection centre. It’s worth a mention for being the location of popular local film, Hooked on You (2007). The film shows the daily lives of fishmongers in Fanling, and stars two renowned actors, Miriam Yeung and Eason Chan.

Best places to eat breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner?

MouMouClub is the first place that pops into my head. I also recommend MouMouClub! It is famous for having Shabu Shabu and Sukiyaki, and the price is reasonable. It is a good place for hanging out with friends!

Best places to drink coffee/find a drink?

A BOUTEA and Starbucks are wonderful places for having a bottle of tea. Although I seldom drink coffee, you can buy one and drink it during your time off.

Best other hangouts?

I enjoy reading in the library, making Fanling Public Library a perfect spot for me!

What’s true/not true about your neighbourhood?

Fanling does not have a well-planned transport system and most people need to rely on the MTR. If you live in a village house, you’ll either have to wait for  around 30 minutes for the minibus, or bring your own car. However, Fanling is a comfortable place for retirees.
